Manassas, a fast growing city of nearly 30,000 people, is 35 miles from Washington D.C. and one hour from Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. The city has designated its charming turn-of-the-century downtown as an historic district and in 1988 was placed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. Manassas is an independent city with its own city council and school system. Warrenton is the seat of Fauquier County. Originally developed as a "crossroads town" at the junction of Falmouth-Winchester and Alexandria-Culpeper Roads, the 1st courthouse was built in 1790, a jail was erected and an academy named for General Joseph Warren, a Revolutionary War hero was founded. During the Civil War the town was the object of raids by Col. John Mosby, who later made his home there and is buried in the Warren Cemetery. Haymarket had its beginnings in the late 1770's as a stop over at the intersection of what is now Routes 15 and 55. The town was built around a tavern owned by William Skinker & chartered by the Virginia General Assembly in 1799. On Nov. 4, 1862, Union troops sacked and burned the town. Only 4 structures were spared. After the war ended, Haymarket gradually grew to its prewar size and became incorporated in 1882. Fairfax was originally called Providence. It became Fairfax in 1875. Confederate President Jefferson Davis reviewed strategy with his generals here in 1861. Also, the Confederate Flag was redesigned and the first 3 were made here. |
